How to Succeed in your Real Estate Classes
Making the decision to go into real estate is a serious, but easy, choice for many. People of all ages and backgrounds take real estate classes, making it one of the most diverse professions around. But as with any other professional class or schooling, the only way to succeed in the class is to take it seriously.
While real estate classes are often the first step to a promising real estate career, classes are also a major commitment. In most states, you’ll spend 60 to 90 hours in real estate classes before you become licensed (in addition to any study time needed for the exam). In order to succeed, it takes commitment both inside and outside of the classroom. To find some of the best tips for succeeding in your real estate class, keep reading below.
Pay attention.
Paying attention during class seems too obvious to be a tip, but it’s critical.
In your real estate education, you’re choosing to attend these classes. You’re paying for them, and your future career is on the line. When you’re in class, whether on campus or online, avoid any potential distractions. Turn off your phone and insist on uninterrupted time. Focus on the material, ask questions, and don’t be afraid to get clarification on a topic.
Use study groups.
Study groups are a great way to help drill the information into your brain after class. If you’re able to, join or create a study group with a few other people from your class. You can meet at a public location such as a library or via video conferencing to help go over main topics, answer each other’s questions, give and receive help, and generally support each other.
Having a study group also allows you to share each other’s notes and resources to help one another pick up on any missed information.
Learn about real estate outside of class.
Don’t use your real estate class as your only source for information. Learn more about real estate by talking to professional real estate agents, reading articles, and watching YouTube videos. The more you learn outside of your notes, the easier it will be able to understand the basics. Real estate isn’t limited to your study guide, so put yourself out there.
Reddit’s real estate community has a lot of great FAQs for all types of real estate professionals and is a great place to start a conversation or ask questions. Even if you don’t post anything here, you can read through any existing threads for additional information and insight into the industry.
Focus on key concepts, but don’t ignore the real questions.
It’s essential to nail the key concepts of real estate before moving into more complex things. Despite this, don’t ignore the real questions. Learn about what types of things homebuyers may ask about, such as what the best home warranty companies are, how much money they need for a down payment, or any potential health and safety hazards of homes. While this information may not be helpful for an exam, it is helpful to your greater understanding of real estate.

Don’t give up.
Nobody thinks real estate class is easy. It’s a huge time commitment and takes a lot of effort. Between your classes, study time, and stressing about the exams, the thought of failure can easily overtake anyone.
If you’re struggling in your class or are considering giving up, stop and think for a minute. Ask yourself what you can do to help fuel your success. Do you need tutoring? Do you need to study longer? Or do you need help concentrating?
Whatever your reason for giving up is, don’t. Keep studying, find ways to help yourself. In the end, passing the exam is an achievement, and doing this for yourself is well worth the stress of potential failure.
Becoming a successful real estate professional takes determination and will, but don’t expect success right away. Keep working towards your goals, and one day your efforts will turn into the most rewarding feeling ever. Good luck!
